Don't Quit—Until You Should

The Mountains We Don't Choose

You can train for Everest. You can't train for the moment that changes everything.

Dianette Wells endured cold, exhaustion, fear, and altitude. Those were mountains she chose. Then came one she didn’t: the death of her 23-year-old son, Johnny Strange. In this deeply personal presentation, she explores how to carry loss without leaving love behind—and find purpose in taking the next step.

Audiences will explore:

  • The difference between chosen adversity and unexpected adversity

  • Why resilience doesn't always look like strength

  • How progress can occur one very small step at a time

  • The importance of human connection during difficult periods

  • Why moving forward doesn't mean leaving someone—or something—behind

  • How meaning and purpose can reemerge after profound change

Ideal for: Resilience programs • Community organizations • Women's groups • Universities • Nonprofits • Grief & loss organizations • Inspirational

What's Next? What's Higher?

The surprising power—and hidden cost—of always chasing the next summit.

Near the summit of Mount Whitney, Dianette Wells felt a powerful, life-changing pull: She wanted more. That hunger launched her into adventure racing, carried her across the Seven Summits, and ultimately took her to Everest. But as each achievement gave way to the next, she began asking a harder question: When does the drive to reach higher keep us from appreciating where we already stand?

Audiences will explore:

  • Why ambitious goals can transform our perception of what's possible

  • How becoming a beginner can be the first step toward extraordinary achievement

  • The importance of separating our own goals from other people's expectations

  • Why comparing our pace to others can undermine performance

  • The difference between reaching a goal and finding fulfillment

  • How to pursue what's next without overlooking what's here

Ideal for:

Entrepreneurs • Sales teams • Leadership groups • Women's organizations • Universities • High-achievement audiences

Courage Means Speaking Up

True courage is not proving you are fearless — it is refusing to remain silent when something feels dangerously wrong.

While climbing Denali, Dianette became concerned that a rope-team member’s decisions could endanger everyone. Speaking up risked appearing difficult, fearful or unwilling to cooperate, yet silence carried consequences. She confronted the guides, making clear that she would surrender the summit rather than surrender her judgment. Her experience reveals the courage required to question authority, resist group pressure and establish boundaries when end results are at stake.

Audiences will explore:

  • Why speaking up can require more courage than pressing forward

  • The difference between fear and sound risk awareness

  • How group pressure can silence good judgment

  • The importance of psychological safety within teams

  • Why protecting people must take priority over protecting appearances

Ideal for:
Corporate leadership programs, management teams, risk-management organizations, safety conferences, women’s leadership events and groups facing high-pressure decisions.

When The Right Decision Still Hurts

Some choices offer no perfect outcome—only the opportunity to remain faithful to what matters most.

On her first Everest attempt, Dianette promised her children she’d return by a set date. Delays forced a choice: stay for the summit or keep her word. She went home; her teammates summited. Haunted by that decision and judged for climbing as a mother, she explores why doing right can hurt.

Audiences will explore:

  • How to make decisions when every available choice carries a cost

  • The conflict between personal ambition and family commitments

  • Why values are tested most severely when something important must be surrendered

  • The different expectations placed upon women, parents and leaders

  • How to live with a principled decision that still produces regret

Ideal for:
Women’s organizations, leadership conferences, parent, and family groups, values-based organizations, professional associations and audiences navigating competing personal and professional priorities.
