Where The Adventure Began
Long before the Seven Summits, expedition races & extreme challenges. . .
Dianette Wells remembers looking from a car window at the towering granite spires of Mount Whitney. She was sixteen—a cheerleader, not a climber—and knew virtually nothing about mountaineering. Yet something about the mountain pulled at her. Someday, she thought, I'm going to climb that.
More than a decade later, she did.
In 1998, Dianette and a group of friends set out to climb the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. They weren't seasoned mountaineers, and Dianette admits she had little idea what she was getting herself into. But somewhere during the long ascent, something changed. The physical challenge, uncertainty and solitude gave her a sense of empowerment and freedom she hadn't experienced before. Hiking quieted her mind. The mountains became a place to think, to test herself and to discover what she was capable of.
Near the summit of Whitney, Dianette realized she didn't simply want to finish the climb. She wanted more.
Standing at 14,505 feet, the question wasn't whether she would ever climb another mountain. It was:
What's next? What's higher?
The answer soon became Mount Kilimanjaro. At 19,341 feet, Africa's highest mountain intensified the feeling Whitney had awakened. Reaching its summit left Dianette feeling alive, empowered and free—and increasingly drawn toward challenges that demanded more of her physically and mentally.
Then a chance introduction changed the trajectory of her life.
After hearing that Dianette and her husband had climbed Kilimanjaro, television producer and Eco-Challenge creator Mark Burnett suggested they try his expedition race. Dianette didn't need convincing. She had watched Eco-Challenge on television and dreamed of competing herself. The invitation opened the door to a world of multi-day expedition racing, remote wilderness, sleep deprivation, navigation, climbing, paddling, cycling and extraordinary physical and mental endurance.
What began with a teenage fascination with a mountain had become something much larger: a lifelong pursuit of challenge, exploration, and the discovery of what lies beyond perceived limits. Whitney had sparked it. Eco-Challenge accelerated it. And for the decades that followed, adventure became not simply something Dianette Wells did, but part of who she was.
